We're here to help!

Master Gardeners are local volunteers and avid gardeners who undergo an intensive training program before they are allowed to help other area gardeners. We've not only learned about gardening in Clallam County, but more importantly we've learned where to find current, safe solutions to local gardening problems. Working under the auspices of the WSU Extension agent, we pass on the latest horticultural research findings from WSU to local home gardeners through various programs such as this web site, summer plant clinics, our demonstration gardens, educational programs and so forth. July Garden Tip: Know Your Insects and Diseases

This time of year we begin to get many clients at our clinics that bring us their beleaguered vegetables and landscape plants showing signs of insect and disease damage. Often we only receive phone calls from folks saying they have been spraying and spraying and can't get rid of the problem. Pea Aphid

Unfortunately what we often find is that these folks have grabbed the first bottle of garden chemical they saw on the shelf in the shed and started spraying without knowing what they were spraying or what they were trying to control! While we understand their desire to stop the damage as soon as possible, it must be understood that it is crucial to know and understand the target before applying any chemicals to it. Applying herbicides (designed to kill plant matter) to an insect problem or applying insecticides (designed to kill insects) to a plant disease problem is not only harmful to the environment, but wastes time and money as well. It is also very important to know if what you are applying is formulated to kill the thing you are trying to eradicate and if that chemical is safe to spray on say.....vegetables which will be consumed.

It can not be stressed enough the importance of reading the label and carefully following the directions on the bottle before applying any chemical in your garden. Its not only import, its the law. If you are uncertain what kind of insect or disease you are trying to do battle with, we encourage you to bring a sample of the insect, the damage its doing or the suspected disease to one of our Master Gardener plant clinics. Our volunteers can help you identify not only the type of insect or disease you are dealing with, but we can also give you recommendations, both chemical and non-chemical, for controling the problem.
