Plant Clinics: Walk-ins Welcome!
Have a question about a plant or garden pest? Gardeners can bring their questions, problems or puzzling plants to Master Gardener volunteers for information and advice at the weekly Plant Clinics. For help with plant identification or plant problems, bring a good specimen and as much information about the plant's history and environment as possible. See the "Tips for Better Diagnosis" (below) for recommendations.
Please bag your plant and insect samples! Plastic ZipLoc bags (or similar) work well.

Tips for Better Diagnosis

- For problem diagnosis, plant samples (specimens) should have both healthy and damaged areas. Not much can be determined from a few leaves, a dead plant or a mangled plant. Try not to crush or damage the sample more than it already is.
- For plant identification, plant samples should include flowers, fruit, cones or seeds if possible and enough stem or stalk to see several leaves and their growing habit. Be sure to pack soft samples with some protection from further damage. And the fresher the sample the better!
- For pest identification, please bring 'em back alive -- or at least a recognizable specimen. Fight the urge to squash that bug. It might be friend and not foe.
- Be prepared to answer some questions about the plant's environment. Note where the specimen is located and it's environment-- e.g., which direction does it face? Is it in the sun or shade, under eaves, protected or exposed? What is your elevation? Is just one plant affected or several? Are they in the same area? How often is the plant watered and fertilized? Has there been any pesticides or herbicides used recently by you or your neighbors? For insects, notice where you find them, what kind of damage is being done to the plant, if any. When you first noticed the insect's appearance and if you notice any other kinds of insects in the area before, during or after. Click here to download a Word document checklist you can fill out prior to coming to a Plant Clinic (not mandatory!).
As with doctors or detectives, the more information you can provide, the more likely we are to find the right answer!
