Master Gardeners

Welcome to Gardeningmg
on the Olympic Peninsula!

The next Master Gardener training starts in January 2009

We're here to help!

Master Gardeners are local volunteers and avid gardeners who undergo an intensive training program before they are allowed to help other area gardeners. We've not only learned about gardening in Clallam County, but more importantly we've learned where to find current, safe solutions to local gardening problems. Working under the auspices of the WSU Extension agent, we pass on the latest horticultural research findings from WSU to local home gardeners through various programs such as this web site, summer plant clinics, our demonstration gardens, educational programs and so forth. For more information about Master Gardeners and our community service work contact Clallam County Master Gardeners!

Garden Tip for May: Planting in Difficult Sites

Wet shade and dry shade can prove difficult areas when it comes to choosing successful landscape plants. Often root rots, molds and fungi can render plants nothing more than a rotting, slimy hulk in wet shade. Dry, spindly plants are often the norm in dry shady areas. However, there are many plants that do well and can even thrive in these problem areas. The trick is to pick the right plant for the right place!

While not showy with color, ferns are a good choice for moist shady areas. They have little to fear from pests and tend to go along nicely with little care. If you have an area of wet shade, be sure to amend with plenty of compost before planting. Even though ferns and other wet shade lovers like damp conditions, too much water and poor drainage is difficult for the best shade tolerant plant to endure. Other moist shade lovers include primrose, vinca, hosta and corydalis.

Dry shade can be an area under a large tree or under an eve next to the house. Good choices for dry shade are digitalis (foxglove), several types of leafy euphorbias, sedums, and creepers like creeping Jenny and blue star creeper. Vinca can also do well in dry shade as well as moist shade.

Careful selection and a little research can lead to finding successful plants for any difficult site.
