Since it's beginning in 1987, the Olympic Peninsula Master Gardener Demonstration Garden has evolved from farmland to become the area center for horticultural experimentation and demonstration for the home gardener. The 2.5 acre garden features native and imported ("exotic") plants that thrive on the North Olympic Peninsula. There are 12 separate garden sections. Plants are identified by common and botanical name tags. During the summer months, Master Gardener volunteers are often available to answer questions and provide home gardening advice.
Rose Garden:
A selection of hardy, disease-resistant varieties that do well in the area. Our collection includes heritage, English, shrub and climbing varieties combined with companion plants in garden design. Climbers are trained on rustic cedar arbors.
Grass Garden:
Grasses can be a feature in any garden but are especially well adapted to landscaping along the Strait where they thrive in the salt wind. We have approximately 30 varieties of different sizes and textures that do well on the Olympic Peninsula.
Formal Garden:
Designed in the traditional manner with regular geometric spaces, the formal garden features differing colors and textures for each quadrant. Perennials have been selected for their ability to thrive here and are accented with annuals. The sedum ground cover is a feature.
Shade Garden:
The garden features native plants that thrive under the canopy of willow trees along a small watercourse. Readily recognizable woodland flowers fill the areas between tree, on logs, and along the stream.
Orchard:
Our orchard is an ongoing long term experiment to understand which varieties of apple, plum and pear do best in our areas. Although you can gain some insight from the growth habits of the 20 some varieties in the garden, you may wish to discuss selections for a home orchard with one of our Master Gardeners specializing in fruit trees.
Vegetable Garden:
Our small, raised vegetable garden is used to demonstrate year-round planting for home use. We sequence the plots from early spring plantings to late fall "over wintering" crops. The garden is a living classroom for our seminars in raising vegetables and planning for continuing yield. New varieties of vegetables are being tested continuously at our WSU test plots in Vancouver Washington.
Small Fruit Garden:
We have selected specific varieties of kiwi, blueberries, gooseberries, currants, raspberries, and strawberries that have done well here. Frames and supports for each are also demonstrated to show how edibles can be used in landscaping.
Herb Garden:
An extensive selection of herbs for culinary and medicinal use are grown in arrangements that showcase their varied color and texture. A unique elderberry "tree" provides partial shade. Note the cat mint (nepeta fresseria) that is badly rumpled by the neighborhood cats who love it.
Shrub Garden:
This area focuses on shrubs of both flowering and foliage interest. An extensive collection of natives include such favorites as ninebark (Physocarpus capitatus), mock orange (Philadelphus lewisii) and red-flowering current (Ribes sanguineum).
Cottage Garden:
Emphasizing an abundance of color and texture through the growing season, perennials and shrubs are selected for showy blooms and time sequenced to provide the traditional cottage garden style. Our climate supports most of the traditional English varieties.

Mixed Border Garden:
This area attempts to blend shrubs, perennials, annuals, and bulbs in harmonious transition through the seasons. In spring the young apple tree blooms over a cascade of ajuga (Ajuga reptans) and forget-me-nots (Myosotis). Asters (Asteraceae) and chrysanthemums (Asteraceae) close the fall season.
Special Projects:
You will want to see our Empress Tree Project
(follow the signs from the Shade Garden). We also have a Streamside Improvement Project and a Wetlands Restoration Project underway.
